Pointing at a part of what already is and framing it. In this mission, I’m not sure if I succeed in encompassing my subject or if, by attempting to frame it, I simply begin to see how limitless the subject really is. I love this interplay. I want to move people in a way that brings a smile to their face and expands their view of the world and of themselves – just a bit more. In the end I am left wondering, do I create the frame or it, me?
I have always been quite imaginative. As a young child, my mind would wander often, venturing off into new and amusing frontiers. One thing I hadn’t imagined though, was one day forming a lucrative career stemming from this unique place my thoughts call home.
I have come to appreciate the value of design increasingly as I continue to work in the field. At first design was a way to create structure and harmony on the screen by pulling inspiration and ideas from the world around me. Back then, I was thinking way too small! Now, I understand that design can recreate and shape our world outside our screens, reaching far beyond the mediums we use. What started in my youth as a fascination with pixels and the potential of technology has interestingly enough turned into a focus on using those very pixels to bring us back outside of the screen, back to ourselves.
I was fortunate to start learning the ins and outs of design from a college professor that taught in my high school. At the time, there were only two of us in the class! – Not too many people had a computer related field on the mind and this was a class on a handful of Adobe programs. – My student project was a website, made in Dreamweaver, for our school’s catering staff. At the end of the year the woman who ran the business offered to buy the design off of me and hired me for continued design services such as flyers and menus. This is where my passion for having a vision and bringing it to life on the screen began.
My next working experience of significance was an internship in college that later turned into a paid job. Again, I was very fortunate. This internship was for an NYC company that designs and prints postage stamps for foreign countries! There, I learned a great deal of the technical end of working in design and of working with print. Yet, the most important lesson I learned was the value of working with a group of people who were kind, patient and generous. I would leave that office feeling uplifted and not bogged down. This is something I am mindful to bring with me every day as I step into work.
From there I went to a very small design company, working with a brilliant designer as my boss. From him I learned to dream big when working on a design. The end result could be as magically, breathtaking as your mind can conjure and it can be even better still, when you’re working with a team!
After this, I had the opportunity to work as the sole designer for a start up where I got the chance to work on everything from their brand to their advertising to their website to their app. It gave me a whole lot of experience and working as the only designer allowed me to build confidence in both my skill and my style.
All of this leads me to today. I work as a Creative Director in a company that is growing quickly and we are leading a kick-ass team of 6 whose talent and commitment to delivering excellence leaves me giddy with excitement! My appreciation of design deepens the more I work at it. On top of that, I have been pleasantly surprised to discover how much I enjoy sharing what I’ve learned with a kindhearted, eager team of professionals whose work I take very little credit for and give much more credit to their sheer dedication, talent and hard work for hours every day. – Still, that very little credit gives me a deep sense of pride. – Moving forward I look to do more designing, less managing and a lot more sharing. My greatest criteria is to surround myself with designers so talented that it oozes from their very pores. In doing so, my own skills will improve by sheer osmosis.
